What We Do.

Since humans first left Africa 60,000 years ago, they have been migrating around the planet in great numbers – the advent of international borders certainly has not stopped global migration.

Who we are

The Migrant is a new publication that aims to expose and highlight all issues pertaining to the rights of people that, for a variety of reasons, move away from their place of usual residence, whether within a country or across an international border, temporarily or permanently. Through this endeavour we want to promote the rights of not only migrants but of refugees and asylum seekers also - whose basic human rights are often violated or perhaps worse, simply ignored.

We have a background in working for a refugee charity and have been involved in several campaigns involved in improving the lives of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers within the UK and abroad. From speaking to members of the public whilst raising funds for the refugee charity we worked at, it became apparent to us that there are plenty of misconceptions surrounding the refugee crisis and a stark lack of empathy towards the plight of refugees.

In particular; our experience suggested that there remains a lot of ignorance surrounding the traumatic situations that refugees flee from and the complications that these bring, scepticism towards the validity of these claims and animosity towards the prospect of the UK welcoming refugees into this country. We felt there was a serious need to bridge the gap in trying to inform the public whilst simultaneously trying to encourage an empathetic appreciation and understanding of what others have endured in the hope of obtaining a better life.

Our Mission

Empathy-driven research and analysis created by our writers are the means through which we at The Migrant hope to raise awareness of these issues that afflict a very real human cost. By raising awareness of these issues we hope that the appreciation and understanding of the importance and complexity of migratory events taking place in the world today will be increased.

Our mission, therefore, is to:

  • Educate and inform others of the stories migrants and refugees alike face on a day to day basis.

  • Contextualise international migratory phenomena.

  • Advocate for more appropriate, efficient and empathetic policy making.

  • Promote and champion writers from migrant backgrounds.

  • Increase the number of writers from migrant backgrounds.

Resources

The resources on our site have been compiled in order to provide our readers with some of the necessary tools and materials to advocate for the protection of migrant rights, to scrutinise policy making within the UK and increasing understanding on issues pertaining to migration.
